That leaves August as a strange, quiet stretch when the city belongs to the people who live here year round, and the calendar this month is unusually generous to them. Two dated sky events, six ticketed shows at the casino, a citywide restaurant discount that expires on the sixteenth, and a construction fence coming down on the west side of town before the season starts. If you live here, this is the good stuff.
The reason to write it all down in one place is simple. Every one of these dates rewards a resident more than a visitor. The restaurant specials are built to keep local kitchens busy during the slow weeks. The casino is filling its August calendar because it knows August is when locals actually go out. The Perseids and the partial lunar eclipse both fall midweek this year, so nobody has to choose between a sky night and a weekend plan. And the Cotino fence is a genuine before-and-after moment for anyone who drives Gerald Ford on a regular basis.
The Taste of Summer Window Closes on the 16th
Taste of Summer Rancho Mirage runs through Sunday, August 16. It is the city's answer to a slow tourism month, and the specials are structured to move locals through the doors of the resort restaurants and the strip-center standbys at the same time. A wristband unlocks the specials, and the participating list this year is long enough that it works as a two-week eating plan rather than a one-night novelty.

- Double Date at Omni Rancho Las Palmas, 41000 Bob Hope Drive. The Italian-California concept from executive chef Jose Lopez opened in March 2026 with a menu pulled from Coachella Valley date farms. Live music runs Wednesday through Sunday in the resort plaza.
- California Bistro, 69820 CA-111. Twenty percent off the à la carte menu with a beverage, Thursday through Sunday.
- Maracas, 72775 Dinah Shore Drive. Fifteen percent off the total bill.

The interpretation locals should hold onto: the participating restaurants are almost entirely the sit-down places that struggle to fill tables between the U.S. Open in Indian Wells wrapping and the January snowbird return. Six headliners inside a four-week window is not a summer schedule. It is a fall schedule that happens to be running in August because the room needs to fill and the artists are already routing through Southern California before the reservation-season venues in Indian Wells and Palm Desert start booking again. Two Nights the Sky Does the Work
The two best free entertainments of the month are both midweek, both visible from any Rancho Mirage backyard with a clear view south or east, and both worth the late bedtime. NASA's What's Up for August 2026 has the details.
Wednesday, August 12 into Thursday, August 13
The Perseid meteor shower peaks under a new moon, which means no lunar interference for the first time in several years. NASA and Astronomy magazine both put realistic rates at sixty to eighty meteors per hour after midnight, with dark-sky observers seeing closer to a hundred. The valley floor has enough spillover light from the 111 corridor that residents will do better on a north-facing patio in the country-club neighborhoods off Frank Sinatra or Da Vall than they will closer to The River. The best window is after the radiant in Perseus clears the northeastern horizon, roughly two hours before dawn. Look northeast, then let your eyes wander. The bright ones streak everywhere.
Thursday, August 27 into Friday, August 28
A deep partial lunar eclipse. At maximum, about ninety-three percent of the moon slips into Earth's umbra, with a subtle rusty tint along the covered edge. Unlike the solar eclipse on the 12th, which is not visible from California, this one is safe to look at with the naked eye from a backyard chaise. Peak covers just after midnight local time. Kids can stay up; the light show is slow.
Between the two, Venus reaches its widest evening separation from the sun on August 14 through 16, sitting brilliant and low in the west right after sunset. It is the object that will outshine everything else on the horizon while you are pouring the first glass of wine on the patio. That is a nice small consolation for anyone who cannot make the Perseid alarm clock.
The West-End Countdown at Cotino
The construction fences along Gerald Ford between Monterey and Bob Hope are hiding a genuine neighborhood change. Storyliving by Disney has confirmed that Cotino Bay Beach, Dining and Shops is scheduled to open this fall on the 618-acre master-planned site, with the public-facing town center anchored by four first-phase tenants that residents can actually visit without buying a house on the lagoon.
The lineup, announced by Disney and confirmed by KESQ in October:
- Elevare, an 8,000-square-foot waterfront restaurant with a terrace facing Cotino Bay and the San Jacintos. Operated by Oak View Group, designed by Ignisio Studios, refined American with local ingredients, lunch and dinner daily, brunch on weekends.
- On the Mark Fine Foods & Provisions, a 3,700-square-foot second location of the Palm Springs specialty market. Artisan goods, wine, craft beer, made-to-order sandwiches. Roughly twice the size of the original.
- Artigiano, the first U.S. location of the Vancouver coffee brand. A 3,000-square-foot European-style café built around Arabica blends.
- Khaga Yoga, a 2,000-square-foot studio with a retail boutique, two teaching rooms, and family classes.
For someone who already lives in Rancho Mirage, the useful reading of that list is not the Disney branding. It is that four independent operators, one of which is a beloved Palm Springs market, are about to give the west end of the city its first meaningful walkable food and coffee cluster since The River opened in 2004. If the fall opening holds, October morning walks around the mile-long promenade become a real thing, and the closest sit-down waterfront lunch to most Rancho Mirage golf communities stops being a drive to Palm Desert. The Artisan Club side of Cotino, which opened October 24, 2025, is closed to non-residents; the town center will be the public front door.
What This Adds Up To
Three weeks of half-price sit-down dinners, six casino shows worth planning around, two sky nights you can watch from the pool deck, and a construction milestone that will change where residents walk on Sunday mornings in October. That is a fuller August calendar than most people who live here give the city credit for. The move is not to leave for cooler weather. The move is to pick two Taste of Summer restaurants before the 16th, one show at the casino, one of the two sky nights, and a Saturday drive past the Cotino fences to see the progress.
